The Washington Capitals have learned that goalie Jose Theodore’s two-month old son has suddenly passed away.
Few details have emerged yet about his son’s passing, but the family is said to be heartbroken.
The team issued a statement saying that they are in full support of Theodore and hope the media can respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
Theodore and his wife also have a three-year old daughter.
What a tragic situation for the goaltender, whose mind couldn’t be further from the ice right now.

The Washington Capitals have hired former NHL All-Star Arturs Irbe as their new goaltending coach.
Irbe will replace Dave Prior, who re-signed after spending 12 years in the same coaching position with the Capitals.
He will have his work cut out for him after the way starter Jose Theodore fell apart down the stretch.
Much of his focus will likely be on top draft pick Simeon Varlamov, who was sensational but streaky during the postseason.

The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Milan Jurcina after going to arbitration.
He was awarded a one-year contract worth $1.375 million. He has played most of his career with Washington.
Jurcina played in 79 of the 82 games last season to lead all Capitals defensemen. He had three goals and a career-high 11 assists.
The defenseman also managed to block a team-high 131 shots, which may be the main reason for his over $400,000 raise.

The Washington Capitals will not be playing in this year’s NHL Winter Classic.
The game, which was set to be played at Fenway Park, was rumored to involved the Boston Bruins and either the Philadelphia Flyers or Washington Capitals.
Many thought the Capitals were the likely choice given their strong finish in the Eastern Conference as well as the star power of Alexander Ovechkin.
However, the NHL has decided to go with the Flyers instead, leaving the Capitals out in the cold.
